Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis

How can you help?  By being an after-school mentor you can help youth to enhance their educational skills, build relationships, foster trust, and make good decisions.

Method of mentoring: Guided activities

Frequency & Time of mentoring: Minimum 1 hour/2 weeks; Anytime 3-6pm on a designated day (Tues-Sat).

Age of youth participants: 7-15

Onsite/Offsite locations: Onsite at one of 5 club locations: 38126, 38122, 38107, 38106

Training: Pre-program and 2 additional trainings

Program Duration: September-July

Memphis Athletic Ministries

How can you help? As a seasonal Coach or Assistant Coach with a basketball, soccer or golf team, you can be engaged in teaching sports skills while also demonstrating life skills such as the value of hard work, dealing with frustration, teamwork, etc.

Method of mentoring: Self-directed through sports and Christian ministry.

Frequency & Time of mentoring: Practices typically once during the workweek between 5-9pm and Saturdays for games.

Age of youth participants: 6-18

Onsite/Offsite locations: 38114; Basketball teams may play around Memphis.

Training: Pre-program training

Program Duration: Seasonal dependant on sport

Type(s)/Focus of mentoring provided: One-on-One mentoring, group mentoring, spiritual growth and development, personal growth and development, sport/recreational opportunities.

Youth Villages

How can you help? A one-on-one relationship can make a huge difference for children in residential treatment or in a transitional living program. Past activities have included off campus events (sporting events, lunch/dinner, going to the park, picnic, playing games, etc.) and, in some cases, helping with career development or educational needs.

Method of mentoring: Guided onsite initially, independent & offsite afterwards.

Frequency & Time of mentoring: Variable by commitment. Usually 2-4 weekend afternoons a month. It is possible to plan visits for after 5 p.m. on weekdays if approved by the counselor.

Age of youth participants: 8-22

Onsite/Offsite locations: Bartlett, Arlington, Midtown.

 Training: Pre-program training with quarterly trainings  

Program Duration: 6 months

LIFT

How can you help? A one-on-one relationship can make a huge difference for children in state care. Past activities have included off campus events (sporting events, lunch/dinner, going to the park, picnic, playing games, etc.) and, in some cases, helping with career development or educational needs.

Method of mentoring: Community-based, independent & offsite.

Frequency & Time of mentoring: 4-6 hours per month. At least two visits per month. Anytime as mutually agreeable.  

Age of youth participants: 8-22

Onsite/Offsite locations: Bartlett, Arlington, Midtown.  

Training: Pre-program training with quarterly trainings

Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA)

How can you help? Through mentoring in our MIFA Teen Job Services, you help provide added support for our teens by focusing on goal setting, problem solving and planning for careers. Teen Job Services is an intensive, one year job readiness/ training program, with emphasis in the areas of education, job readiness training and job placement.

Method of mentoring: Guided Activities

Frequency & Time of mentoring: 2nd Thursdays of each month from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, and weekly phone “check-ins”.

Age of youth participants: 15 year old students

Onsite/Off-Site locations: MIFA Headquarters, 910 Vance Ave., Memphis, TN 38126

Training: Pre-program orientation & training

Program Duration: 1 calendar year

Memphis City Schools-CONNECT

How can you help? Mentor a student joins this program seeking help. Focus of program is on improving academic performance, increasing social skills and school engagement.

Method of mentoring: Self-directed

Frequency & Time of mentoring: 1 hour per week during school hours

Age of youth participants: 9-15

Onsite/Off-Site locations: Located at five “Fresh Start” schools in Whitehaven, Downtown South Memphis area, Midtown area, Frayser, South Memphis

Schools: Fairview Junior High, Georgian Hills Junior High, Longview Middle School, Vance Middle School, and Winchester Elementary

Training: 3 hour pre-program orientation & training

Program Duration: 1 calendar year

STREETS Ministries

How can you help? The Pathways Mentoring / Tutoring Program pairs a Christian mentor with a student, with whom they work (ideally) from 7th through the 12th grade. The pair meets once a week and cover topics from academics (including Gateway and SAT/ACT prep), faith and life skills.

Method of mentoring: Self-directed

Frequency & Time of mentoring: Flexible, usually 1 hour/week Monday – Thursday, 3pm – 6pm

Age of youth participants: 8 – 20 years old

Onsite/Off-Site locations: South Forum District in South Memphis

The Exchange Club Family Center

How can you help? By lending advice, assistance and sometimes just an ear to youth, you can positively impact the development of families.

Method of mentoring: Self-directed

Frequency & Time of mentoring: Weekly visits with times and dates set between mentor and parent, usually 1 hour/week.

Program Duration: 10 weeks, anytime of year

Age of youth participants: 7-17

Onsite/Off-Site locations: Off-site. After being trained by the Family Center, you may visit the homes of families who either have a long-term history or a risk of abusing or neglecting their children. You will provide emotional support and serve as role models while helping families with daily parenting and household management tasks.

Training: 3-6 hours initial training, ongoing training as requested

Program Duration: 10 Weeks

Families of Incarcerated Individuals-Project Aware Mentoring Program

How can you help? Mentor a young person who has a family member incarcerated. Meet for 2 hours a week, including monthly social outings with other mentors and youth. Focus of program is on improving self-esteem of youth and helping to improve academic skills.

Method of mentoring: Self-directed with monthly social activities

Frequency & Time of mentoring: 2 hours per week, arranged between mentor and mentee

Age of youth participants: 5-17

Onsite/Off-Site locations: Locations chosen between mentor and mentee

Training: After application, interview and background check, one day pre-program orientation & training; quarterly trainings on relevant topics

Program Duration: 1 calendar year
