Connecting to Memphis

MemphisConnect is a program providing positive matches between a company’s newly recruited employees and Academy Alumni, the  most dynamic ambassadors our city has to offer. Our alumni have strong connections to Memphis’ top leadership and to one another - a diverse network of city boosters they can share with your employee.

Memphis – The Summer Experience
As MemphisConnect seeks to engage knowledge workers of all ages, a special emphasis has been placed on those that are about to enter the workforce. Through Memphis – The Summer Experience, interns and recent college grads get a chance to meet peers, meet established city leaders, and meet Memphis through a summer-long program. Recruit. Relocate. Retain.
Quarterly forums keep hiring managers and HR executives up to date on best practices and tools they can use to attract top talent into Memphis. Hiring managers are provided resources to the issues that provide challenges in our city. Emphasis is given to the four issues that deter out-of-town candidates from accepting a job in Memphis – crime, education, government and race relations. Additionally, best practices are shared among participants that allow these companies to make Memphis a player in the global talent game for top candidates across the board.

Celebrate What's Right
This luncheon series highlights what gives our city life and makes us proud to live and work here.  Six times per year we bring together employees from companies across Memphis for an infusion of optimism and information.  Recent gatherings have featured presentations from Memphis innovators, young politicos, and bioscience leaders.  This series is generously sponsored by the First Tennessee Foundation.

Memphis 101
Inspiring pride and respect for our city, Memphis 101 is an interactive crash course in Memphis culture, people and politics, offering a fresh perspective into our city's personality and how that personality was formed.  Corporations share Memphis 101 with hiring managers and other diverse audiences including new hires and their spouses. This dynamic tool is presented through the exclusive license of archer>malmo, the largest marketing and communications firm in Tennessee.

Board Placements
When your new hires have a place at the community leadership table, serving on the board of one of Memphis' many effective non-profits, they are exponentially more likely to set their roots here for the long term. The Academy placed over 150 people on non-profit boards in 2008 based on careful matching of interests and expertise.

Academy Masters
For experienced executives, the Masters program is designed and facilitated by the Center for Creative Leadership, ranked #1 worldwide by both BusinessWeek and Financial Times for executive leadership development. This 3.5 day Leadership Development Intensive hosted at The Peabody Hotel provides CCL training, right here in Memphis. The relationships that develop among this leadership cohort are a potential retention tool, and a powerful local network for your business.

Academy Fellows
The Academy Fellows is a 10-month program that provides high-potential emerging leaders the resources and exposure needed to positively impact the Memphis community. Fellows represent 160 companies, including corporations, entrepreneurial ventures, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. While 50% are native Memphians, 50% hail from around the world. The average age of the Fellows is 34, and 49% are ethnic minorities.

According to Alumni, as a result of completing the Fellows program, 89% are more likely to remain in Memphis, 97% are likely to support community efforts through volunteering their times and efforts, 99% are likely to give financially to charitable organizations, and 93% are interested in or currently holding leadership roles throughout the community. Fellows are selected by application only.
