How are the teachers in your building structuring their classroom environments to center students’ voices? What are teachers doing in classrooms to support students in reflecting on their own identities while learning about the perspectives and identities of their classmates? What opportunities do students have to help shape their classrooms?

These are some of the questions that guide you through The Leadership Academy’s newly updated Culturally Responsive In-Person Observation Guide. This unique classroom walkthrough tool is designed to support school leaders in creating culturally responsive schools that are intentionally built to ensure children of every race, ethnicity, language, and other identity characteristics have what they need to achieve academic, social, and emotional success. The guide is built around The Leadership Academy’s eight core research-based actions of a culturally responsive leader that have been found to create conditions for learning and success for all students, particularly those who have been minoritized.

The guide contains dozens of guiding questions, worksheets, and sample indicators of what successful practice can look like. Leaders can use the tool to make data-informed decisions which will improve students’ learning experiences. The guide can be implemented in a variety of ways, including for teacher-to-teacher classroom observations, student-led observations, and reciprocal leader visits between schools.
